Most B2B companies have something that makes them different.

It might be a better product, a smarter methodology, a simpler integration, or a level of service that customers really appreciate. Sometimes the difference is significant. More often, it’s a collection of small advantages that add up over time.

The problem is that buyers can’t see those differences at the beginning of the buying journey.

When someone first discovers your company, they don’t know what it’s like to work with you. They haven’t used your product, spoken to your team, or experienced your service. All they have to judge you by is what you communicate through your website, videos, LinkedIn posts, presentations, or anything else they find.

Your advantage may be real. But until you communicate it clearly, buyers can’t take it into account.

That’s why one of the biggest competitive advantages in B2B isn’t just having a better product. It’s helping buyers understand why it’s better.

Video helps make complex ideas easier to understand

If your goal is to make your difference visible, video is one of the best tools you have.

Text can explain an idea. Video can explain it while also showing the product, demonstrating a process, or letting buyers hear directly from the people behind it.

For many B2B companies, that’s especially valuable because what they’re selling isn’t immediately obvious. The more technical or complex the offer, the more important it becomes to explain it clearly.

There’s another reason video is so effective.

Your sales team can only be in one meeting at a time. A video can keep working whether someone is visiting your website, opening an email from a colleague, or researching suppliers late in the evening.

It continues explaining your business when your team isn’t there to do it.
And that’s particularly important during one stage of the buying journey.

Buyers evaluate you before they talk to you

In this previous article, I described a typical B2B buying journey: buyers find you, evaluate you, validate you, decide, and then use what they bought.

The evaluation stage is where communication has the biggest influence.

Before speaking to your sales team, buyers usually spend time researching on their own. They visit your website, read your content, watch your videos, compare you with competitors, and build an opinion of your company.

By the time they book a meeting, they’ve often already decided whether you’re worth considering.

During this part of the journey, your communication is representing your business.
Your website, videos, presentations, and case studies are answering the questions your sales team can’t answer yet.

That’s why clarity matters so much. Most buyers are trying to understand what you do, whether you can solve their problem, and whether you’re worth speaking to.
If that isn’t clear, they simply move on to the next option.

What this looks like in practice

The role of clarity changes throughout the buying journey.

Evaluation

We produced a corporate video for RFI Global with their CEO, Matt Lawrence.
The goal wasn’t to create a corporate film that looked impressive. It was to help potential buyers quickly understand who RFI Global is, what the company does, and why it matters.

That video supports the evaluation stage. It helps buyers build confidence before they ever speak to someone from the company.

From evaluation to validation

We also produced a product video for their iSky Radar platform. Interestingly, we didn’t start by talking about the product.

We first explained why digital experience has become such an important competitive advantage for businesses. Once buyers understood that challenge, it became much easier to explain how the platform helped solve it.

Instead of leading with features, we started with the problem. That makes it easier for buyers to understand why the product matters before they begin evaluating how it works.

Decision

Even when buyers finally meet your sales team, clarity still matters.

We’ve made a lot of sales and demo videos built to be used by commercial teams in their one-to-one meetings with decision-makers, like this series for Kantar.

The sales teams loved them: they could get the explaining out of the way quickly, and spend the meeting on a real conversation instead.

The video hasn’t replaced the salesperson. It’s simply made the meeting more productive.

The same principle carries on after the sale, where clear educational content helps customers use the product well and get more value from it.

Clarity is a competitive advantage

Every B2B company has something that makes it different. The companies that grow fastest are the ones that help buyers understand that difference sooner.

That’s where video can have its biggest impact.

Not because it’s more engaging than text, or because people prefer watching videos.
Because it helps explain complex ideas clearly, even when your team isn’t there to explain them.

And in B2B, where so much of the buying journey happens before a sales conversation, that’s a real competitive advantage.

So before planning your next video, don’t ask whether it will get more views.

Ask whether it will help buyers understand your business more clearly.

Because when buyers understand your value, they’re much more likely to choose it.

Key takeaways

  • Buyers can’t appreciate what makes your business different if they don’t understand it.
  • Much of the B2B buying journey happens before a buyer speaks to sales, so your videos are often explaining your business without you being there.
  • Video is one of the most effective ways to make complex products, services, and ideas easier to understand.
  • Clearer understanding builds confidence, and confident buyers make decisions more easily.
  • The companies that communicate their value most clearly often gain an advantage that competitors can’t easily copy.
  • The best B2B videos don’t just promote a product—they help buyers understand why it matters.

Frequently asked questions

Why is clarity such an advantage in B2B?

Because buyers compare several companies before speaking to sales. If they don’t quickly understand what makes your business different, they may never add you to their shortlist. Clear communication helps buyers build confidence earlier in the buying journey.

Why is video so effective for explaining complex products or services?

Video combines visuals, demonstration, and human explanation in one format. It helps buyers understand ideas that are often difficult to explain with text alone, making it easier to see the value behind a product or service.

Does this only apply to complex B2B products?

No. Every B2B company benefits when buyers understand its value more quickly. The more technical or specialised the offer, however, the bigger difference clear video communication can make.

Can video really influence buyers before they speak to sales?

Yes. Many buyers visit your website, watch videos, read content, and compare suppliers before booking a meeting. During that evaluation stage, your videos are often answering questions and building confidence before anyone from your team gets involved.

What makes a B2B video effective?

A successful B2B video doesn’t just describe a product or list its features. It helps buyers understand a problem, explains why your approach is different, and gives them confidence that you’re the right company to work with.
